The first year nobody withholds anything for you.
The first year of 1099 income is the one that surprises people. Self-employment tax nobody mentioned. Quarterly estimates nobody sent a bill for. Deductions that depend on records you did not know to keep. None of it is hard once it is set up. All of it is expensive to reconstruct after the fact.
What nobody withheld for you.
Each one is fixable if it is handled before the return.
What a 1099 Actually Costs You
A W-2 splits Social Security and Medicare with an employer. On 1099 income you pay both halves as self-employment tax, on top of income tax. That gap turns an expected refund into a balance due.
Schedule C and the Home Office
The home office deduction is legitimate and commonly under-claimed; we set the record up in year one.
Quarterly Estimated Payments Without the April Surprise
The IRS expects payments through the year, generally four of them (see the due dates). Miss them and the penalty is not the whole story: the cash is gone by April either way. We size the estimates to real income rather than last year’s guess.
Crypto, Cost Basis, Wash Sales & the 1099-B
Every disposal is a taxable event. Bring the full transaction history; the exchange summary is not enough.
Mileage and the Records That Survive
Vehicle expense is one of the most-examined deductions on a Schedule C. The method you choose in year one matters for later years, and a contemporaneous log is worth more than a reconstruction. We set it up at the start.
When an LLC or S-Corp Starts to Pay
An S-corp starts to pay at a profit level your numbers decide. See entity selection for how we model it.
What first-year filers ask us.
Do I need to pay quarterly estimated taxes in my first year?
Generally yes, once you expect to owe a meaningful amount for the year. The requirement is about whether enough tax is being paid in through the year by any means. Someone with 1099 income and a spouse’s W-2 withholding may be covered; someone with only 1099 income usually is not. We look at the whole picture before setting a number.
Can I deduct my home office?
If a defined space is used regularly and exclusively for the business, yes. Exclusively is the word that does most of the work. A desk in a spare room used only for the business generally qualifies; a kitchen table does not. There are two calculation methods, and which one is better depends on the space and your other costs.
How is crypto taxed if I never cashed out to dollars?
Trading one coin for another is generally a disposal, and a taxable event, even without touching dollars. The gain or loss is measured against cost basis. Exchanges often do not track basis across transfers, which is why we ask for full transaction history rather than a year-end statement.
Should I form an LLC right away?
An LLC is a state-law liability choice, and how it is taxed is a separate federal question. Forming one does not by itself change your tax. It can be the right first step for other reasons. If the goal is tax savings, the question is whether your profit level supports an S-corp election, which we model rather than assume.
I have 1099 income and a regular job. Does this still apply?
Yes. The self-employment side is reported and taxed on its own regardless of the W-2 job, and the W-2 withholding may or may not cover it. This is one of the most common situations we see, and the interaction between the two is exactly what determines whether you owe in April.
